Peter G. Hanson, M.D.

“Stress is simply the adaptation of our bodies and minds to change.”

Whether it’s the daily pressures of work, personal challenges, or simply the fast-paced nature of modern life, stress can take a toll on our well-being. Fortunately, there are simple, effective ways to find relief and restore balance. This blog will guide you through easy acupressure and self-massage techniques you can use on-the-go to manage stress and cultivate a sense of calm whenever needed.

How to Quiet the Mind and Calm the Body

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by constant distractions and a noisy mind. This mental clutter can lead to stress, anxiety, and even physical health issues.

Fortunately, mindfulness practices offer a powerful way to cultivate inner peace and improve overall well-being. The American Psychological Association highlights that mindfulness can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, aid in pain management and addiction recovery, and potentially boost the immune system.

Quiet Your Mind

Try these seven simple mindfulness practices to quiet your mind and calm your body:

1. Stop To Rest

Notice what you see, hear, and feel in the moment you pause in stillness. Listen to this mindful moment meditation to soak in the beauty around you.

2. Relax with Your Breath

Take a deep breath and focus on your exhalation, feeling yourself letting go as you breathe out. Follow along with this 7-11 breathing practice.

3. Visual Awareness

Focus on something interesting or beautiful you see nearby and take a moment to notice its details. Follow along with this grounding meditation that engages your 5 senses.

4. Listen to Your Surroundings

Bring your attention to the sounds you hear and pause to listen carefully, focusing on each sound separately. Watch this guided meditation to tune into your surroundings and notice the sounds around you.

5. Check-In with Your Body

Bring your attention into your body and feel the sensations in each area. Release any tension or tightness and let relaxation spread. Watch this 10-minute guided chair yoga sequence to invigorate energy into the body.

6. Keep the Good Things in Mind

Imagine someone or something you love and feel the joy and serenity it brings to your life. Check out this journal prompt to help you reflect on moments of joy.

7. Focus on Gratitude

Think about someone or something you’re grateful for and reflect on how it enriches your life. Start your mornings with a virtual Gratitude Meditation class.

Calm Your Body

Incorporating these mindfulness practices into your daily routine can significantly enhance your ability to navigate life’s challenges with clarity and resilience. Embrace mindfulness and experience the transformative power of inner peace.

Wellness in Motion: Why Movement Matters

Hippocrates

“If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.”

Active Body, Healthy Life!

Physical activity is a key component of health and well-being. Incorporating movement into your day can positively impact your life in many ways, including:

Better Quality of Sleep

Improved Cardiovascular Health

Stronger Bones and Muscles

Easier Weight Management

Better Mood and Mental Health

Lower Risk of Diabetes and Certain Cancers

Individuals who engage in regular physical activity report higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction compared to those who are inactive, with a notable 30% increase in their overall sense of well-being.* Increased activity and movement was significantly related to life satisfaction and happiness in young, middle-aged, and older adults.

Tips for getting started

Start Slow

You don’t have to spend hours in the gym to reap the benefits of incorporating movement into your daily routine. As the saying goes, “One must walk before you can run.” Take five minutes this week to get in a stretch, go for a quick walk, or lift some light weights. Next week, make it ten. In no time at all, you will have created a new healthy habit!

Incorporate More Movement Wherever You Are

Did you know that we sit up to 15 hours a day? Fit in movement by making sure you stand up and move at least once an hour. Take the stairs, try a standing desk, park farther away, and add in exercise during commercial breaks while you’re watching TV.

Find Activities You Enjoy

Is there something you’ve always wanted to try? Now is the time! Is dancing your thing? Do you like to hike or swim? What about yoga? Be open to exploring different options.

Create a Routine

Make movement a habit, just like brushing your teeth. Schedule what you plan to do and when. Having SMART Goals (goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) increases the likelihood of your success by more than 90%. Checking in on your progress over time can be very motivating.

Seek Support

Do you prefer to work out solo or love a group? Either way, you don’t have to go it alone. Check in with an accountability partner or use a smart watch that tracks daily movement (steps, exercise minutes, etc.) to help you maintain momentum.
