How to Break Unhealthy Eating Patterns

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

Many of us have developed eating habits — both good and bad. When it comes to unhealthy eating habits, it’s not just about making poor food choices.

Some bad habits include certain behaviors:

  • Skipping meals
  • Eating too fast
  • Eating when feeling sad, stressed or tired
  • Mindless snacking while watching TV
  • Eating when you aren’t hungry

If you examine your patterns and make behavior changes, you can help create a positive change in your eating habits.

Try these tips to build better eating habits:

  1. Start a food journal.
Food journaling sheds light on your eating patterns. It draws your attention to food-related pitfalls that may have previously thrown you off track and gives you the information you need to move forward.

  2. Practice mindful eating.
Mindless eating can lead to overeating, undereating or making poor food choices. Try mindful eating instead: Eat slowly, listen to body sensations and hunger cues, and pay attention to your thoughts and feelings. You will be more likely to make healthy choices.

  3. Control your environment.
Consider reshaping the environment around you to make it easier to stick to new habits:
    • Be prepared — keep more fruit and healthy snacks at home and at work.
    • Keep a reusable water bottle with you to make it easier to stay hydrated.
    • Use smaller plates for your meals to encourage smaller portions.
    • Display healthy food in a prominent place to make it easy to grab.
    • Cook most of your meals at home to be more in control of what you eat.

How to Get Out of a Funk

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

Do you have a case of the Mondays, the blues or the blechs? After the past two-plus years we’ve all experienced, occasionally feeling like you’re in a funk is certainly understandable.

While the following quick tips won’t fix everything, doing one or more is highly likely to boost your mood quickly and brighten your day:

  1. Eat a nutritious meal or snack. A diet high in sugar, saturated fats and processed foods is associated with an increased risk of depression. A healthy diet can’t prevent or cure depression, but eating a bit of dark chocolate, salmon, yogurt, nuts, fruits and vegetables can boost your mental — and physical — health.

  2. Call a friend. Feeling lonely correlates with anxiety and depression, sleep problems, an increased reliance on ineffective coping skills — such as drinking, spending and isolating — and a general feeling of distress. Create connection — on the phone, via a video call or in person.

  3. Get some sleep. Sleep-deprivation can cause anxiety, sadness, impatience and irritability. While regular nightly sleep is important, taking a 30-minute power nap can help put a little pep in your step. Put away digital devices, close the window shades, and relax your brain with meditation or light music for best napping results.

  4. Go outside. Nature can be healing for both the body and mind. Going to the beach, hiking in a the  mountains or simply visiting a park can help you to feel both happy and calm. What’s more, soaking up a bit of sunshine can increase your levels of vitamin D and serotonin — the “feel good” neurotransmitter in your brain.

  5. Exercise. Physical activity improves your mood by releasing endorphins and serotonin. Both help create feelings of happiness and reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. Exercise can also help foster your self-confidence — all ways to fix that feeling of being in a funk.

Foods That Help Strengthen Your Bones

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

By 2040, osteoporosis is predicted to cause 3.2 million fractures in the U.S. each year, up from 1.9 million in 2018. That’s a 68% increase. To avoid being a part of that statistic, consider making a few changes to your diet.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), osteoporosis develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decrease, leading to loss of bone strength. This can result in fractures and broken bones. However, staying physically active, avoiding alcohol and tobacco misuse, taking medications as prescribed and eating a balanced diet can help you improve and maintain your bone health.

A well-balanced diet should include plenty of fruits and vegetables; an appropriate amount of calories for your age, height, weight and activity level; and foods and drinks that include calcium, vitamin D and protein.

Sources of calcium include:

  • Low-fat dairy products
  • Dark green leafy vegetables
  • Broccoli
  • Sardines and salmon
  • Calcium-fortified foods, such as soymilk, tofu, orange juice, cereals and breads

Vitamin D can be processed in the skin through sun exposure, and can be added to your diet by consuming:

  • Fatty fish
  • Fish oils
  • Egg yolks
  • Liver
  • Vitamin D-fortified foods, such as milk and cereals

An average adult needs about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram — or per 2.2 pounds — of body weight per day. Additionally, there are several other minerals and vitamins needed to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. These include magnesium, zinc, boron, vitamin K, vitamin C and some of the B vitamins, all of which work together to create healthy bones.

Talk with your doctor or a registered dietician nutritionist to determine if you are meeting the recommended daily allowance of each nutrient, when bone-density screening is appropriate for you, and which lifestyle changes can help improve your bone health.

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

Summertime is here, making many of us feel out of sync with our daily routines. This can lead to stress in both mind and body.

To help calm the nervous system and release pent-up energy, try these coping strategies and self-care routines that include all six of your senses:

  • Take a 15-minute walk, three times a day. While walking, listen to nature — the birds chirping, waves crashing and the wind through the trees.
  • Exercise until you produce a sweat — it helps detox the body and build strength.
  • Drink six to eight glasses of water a day to keep your organs healthy.
  • Choose healthy foods with lots of greens, raw nuts, fruits and protein.
  • Breathe — deep breaths bring oxygen to the brain and body.
  • Try yoga or a meditation practice — it grounds and energizes the body.
  • Listen to music and sing out loud.
  • Dance to the sun, moon and stars. Express your feelings through movement.
  • Garden and plant new seeds of hope — they can feed your family, too.
  • Begin a new hobby, such as baking, knitting or birdwatching.

The small actions we practice daily to celebrate our mind, body and soul can have a lasting positive impact for weeks and years to come.

Foods to Combat Inflammation

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

Inflammation is an indication that the body is reacting to some type of outside agent, whether it’s pollution, diet or an injury. While designed to help us heal, too much inflammation can cause problems in various organs.

However, there are natural anti-inflammatories we can consume, which can also help lower the chances of having other chronic health conditions, such as heart disease. Following a diet plan that mirrors the Mediterranean diet, rich in whole foods and low in processed foods and saturated fats, can help decrease inflammation.

The Mediterranean diet includes these staples:

  • Fish: at least 3 to 4 ounces, twice a week
  • Nuts and Seeds: 1.5 ounces (about a handful) daily
  • Fruits and Vegetables: 9 or more servings daily
  • Olive Oil: 2 to 3 tablespoons daily
  • Beans: at least 1 cup, twice a week
  • Whole Grains: 6 ounces daily

However, for those with inflammatory diseases, a few foods often considered healthy can worsen inflammation. These include certain nuts, whole grains that contain gluten, and vegetables in the nightshade family — white potatoes, eggplant, bell peppers and tomatoes. Eliminate these from your diet to see if inflammation decreases, and then slowly add them back in to see how your body responds.
