Using Mindfulness to Escape Daily Stress

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

How often do you daydream about “beaming yourself up” — Star Trek-style — away from your stressful day? Whether it’s to travel to your favorite place on the beach or a quiet spot in your garden, most of us have moments when we’d like to be somewhere outside our sometimes stressful, everyday life.

Unfortunately, we can’t always physically beam away to escape our stress. But we can find an escape of sorts by training our minds with mindfulness skills.

But what is mindfulness and how do you practice it? Mindfulness is three skills working together:

  • Concentration — Choosing where to pay attention
  • Clarity — Tracking attention and noticing details
  • Equanimity balance — Allowing your sensory experience to come and go freely without resisting

Putting mindfulness into action

Focus your attention for a couple of minutes on an object near you (concentration), note the details (clarity), allow what you are hearing and feeling to freely come and go in the background (equanimity), and keep your focus on what you see. When the attention wanders, return it to the object over and over again.

Scientists call this a “bicep curl for the brain.” Distraction does to our brains what gravity does to our muscles — we must strengthen both with exercise.

If you wanted to learn how to cook, play tennis or piano, you would have to get instruction and practice, practice, practice! Developing your mindfulness skills to free yourself of stress also requires you to learn and practice.

How To Make a Self-Soothe Kit

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

Sometimes, life demands you pull out your self-soothe toolbox. A self-soothe kit allows you to use your five senses to cope during times of emotional stress by distracting you from the negative and helping you focus on the present. Be creative and customize the items you include in your kit to reflect your personal needs and preferences. Consider your five senses: What brings each a soothing feeling of joy and peacefulness?

Sight

Find your “sight for sore eyes.” Perhaps it’s a postcard from your favorite vacation spot or photos of your pet or loved ones. Maybe it’s a list of online links that lead you to your favorite snapshots or funny cat videos. Whether these images bring a smile to your face, make you LOL or simply manage to distract your negative thoughts for a bit, they’ll likely get the feel-good chemicals flowing.

Sound

Create a playlist of your favorite songs that lift you up and boost your mood. Not in the mood for music? Listen to an audiobook or guided meditation, or add a note to your kit that lists your favorite places to go to hear the sounds of the surf or birds singing. Sometimes when you’re feeling down, you need little reminders of where to find the things that lift you up.

Smell

Your sense of smell is located between the memory and emotion regulation centers in your brain, which is why a scent can often bring back experiences both good and bad. Focus on the good by figuring out which essential oils, hand lotions, perfumes, dried flower-filled sachets, candles or even coffee beans fill you with feelings of love and warmth.

Touch

Touch has so much power — the ability to connect people, share love and demonstrate support when there are no words. Touch can also soothe. A smooth rock collected during a peaceful walk, Silly Putty, a fidget spinner, an ice pack, heat pad or a beloved small stuffed animal — include what brings you a sense of peace, or simply distracts you from negative thoughts and emotions.

Taste

Find flavors that shift your attention away from stress. For some, adding a piece of chocolate or bag of your favorite tea can do the trick. For others, a spicy mint can provide a sort of shock to the system to bring you into the present moment. Or consider adding a gift card or a few dollars to your box to use in case you need a special— favorite ice cream or fancy coffee drink — self-soothing treat.

5 Ways to Create Financial Stability

Financial stability means different things to everyone. For some, maybe it means having enough money to cover bills and unexpected expenses. For others, maybe it means having a retirement fund. No matter what it means to you, here are five things you can do to create financial stability:

1. Track how you spend your money. Keep track of your spending for 2 months. Include bills and regular expenses, plus anything else you spend money on. And don’t judge yourself. You can use this information to set new goals and make a plan, so keep track of everything.

2. Learn more about budgeting and financial planning. Lots of communities have classes that are free or don’t cost much, and some may be available online, and don’t forget about your local library. Many libraries have educational materials you can borrow for free.

3. Make a plan to help you reach your goals. It’s important your plan is realistic and that you can commit to it for the long run. Sure, cutting your spending in half will help you save money faster. But it might make you miserable, and you probably won’t want to keep it up. Think about small changes you can make that you’ll be able to stick with over time.

4. Automate your savings. Now, most of us have heard about the benefits of starting a savings account, but sometimes it can be tempting to spend extra money instead of saving it. Setting up an automatic transfer from your checking account to your savings account removes that temptation. Get started by setting up an account at a bank, either online or in person. From there you can decide how much you want to have transferred to your savings each month.

5. Be patient. While some goals may come easy, it may take years for you to reach some of your biggest goals., and that’s okay. Keep it up, and you’ll get there. Try not to get discouraged along the way. What’s important is to make a plan and stick with it over time. It may help if you set limits on how often you check your financial statements, and you might also try focusing on small milestones along the way, like paying off a big bill. Remember, setting yourself up for financial stability takes time and patience. Keep at it, and with each day you’ll be a little closer to reaching your goals.

6 Healthy Changes for Long-Term Results

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

Are you trying to reach your health goals but not sure how to do it? Many online influencers, magazines — and even some friends — promote diets that claim to be healthy. However, they might only produce short-term results rather than long-term health benefits — and may even be harmful.

If you want to reach your health goals and get long-term results, aim for making the following six changes that are realistic and achievable:

  1. Eat your protein. Getting enough protein in your diet is essential to good health. It helps you build strength and muscle and recover from injury. Protein also helps you feel full, which can aid in weight loss.
  2. Don’t skip carbs. Carbohydrates are the brain’s primary source of fuel and are an important part of a balanced diet. Try to include at least three servings per day, choose whole-grain carbohydrate sources and follow portion-size recommendations.
  3. Add more fruits and vegetables to increase fiber and fullness. Covering half of your plate in fruits and veggies will help you increase your fiber intake, which will increase your fullness, keep you feeling satisfied for longer, help you lose weight, and aid in achieving a more balanced diet.
  4. Eat five to six small meals or snacks daily. Add two to three snacks between your three primary meals, which should be a combination of a carbohydrate, fruit or veggie, and a protein. This will increase fullness and you will be more likely to have smaller portions at mealtime.
  5. Make it easy. Have snacks that are easy to prepare or ready to go, such as a banana and peanut butter, or an apple with string cheese. And if you don’t have time to prepare meals each day, cook several servings of a dish on Sunday and eat it for lunch the rest of the week.
  6. Make one change at a time. If you focus on too many diet and lifestyle changes at the same time, it can be difficult to keep up with them all. Focus on one small change at a time, master that by making it into a new habit, then pick your next small change.

If you have questions or concerns about your diet or overall health, talk with your doctor or a registered dietitian nutritionist. Together, you can come up with a plan to meet your unique needs.

5 Tips to Fix Bad Heart Habits

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women and affects people of all ages. Many who die suddenly of heart disease have no previous warning signs, which is why heart disease is often called the “silent killer.”

Learn the science behind 5 bad heart health habits and how to break them:

  1. Get off the couch. Sitting for extended periods of time increases your risk of heart attack and stroke, which experts attribute to rising blood levels of fats and sugars. Go for a walk, ride a bike, take a dance class or join an amateur sports club.
  2. Get vocal about stress. Feeling overwhelmed or depressed? These feelings can affect heart health and mental health, especially if you keep them concealed. Support from loved ones and professionals boost health, whereas keeping stress to yourself can hurt it.
  3. Get flossing. Research has shown a strong link between gum disease and heart disease. Not flossing can cause bacteria-coated plaque to build up over time, which can lead to gum disease and trigger inflammation in the body, so floss at least once a day.
  4. Get by with a little help from your friends. Studies show that people with stronger connections to family, friends and society live longer, healthier lives. Make time for loved ones and turn to them for support or simply to connect.
  5. Get perspective: Heart disease claims more lives in the U. S. than any other illness. More than 600,000 people die of poor heart health every year. People assuming they’re not at risk is one of the most dangerous things they can do to their health.

Talk with your doctor about your personal risk for heart disease. With heart health knowledge and the desire to break a few bad habits, you can prevent heart disease, and even save your life.

Debunking Aging Myths

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, adults age 65 and older are expected to outnumber children in the U.S. by 2034 — the first time in our country’s history. Here, we dispel some common myths about the aging process and how it impacts our health.

Myth No. 1: Feeling isolated and lonely is normal as I get older.

Many aging people find themselves feeling isolated and lonely, which may lead to depression, anxiety and sadness. But feeling isolated and lonely is not a normal part of aging. Aging comes with many emotional and mental health benefits. For example, seniors can experience a sense of freedom in how they spend their time, with more time to spend with family and friends.

Myth No. 2: Quitting smoking won’t make a difference at my age.

Quitting smoking at any age offers many health benefits. Within a few hours of quitting smoking, the carbon monoxide level in your blood begins to decline. In a few weeks, your circulation improves and your lung function increases.

Additional long-term benefits include improved blood pressure levels and decreased risk of:

  • Respiratory issues and illness
  • Cancer
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Lung disease

Myth No. 3: I can’t participate in the physical activities I enjoyed when I was younger.

Physical activity continues to be very important as you age. Loss of mobility is the result of lost physical and mental health, not aging itself. Your health and longevity are at risk when you have a sedentary lifestyle. Prioritizing physical and mental health — along with managing chronic diseases — helps keep aging adults independent longer.

Myth No. 4: The older I get, the less sleep I need.

A common misconception is that a person’s sleeping needs decline with age. Older adults need the same amount of sleep as all adults — 7 to 9 hours each night. Although your sleeping patterns may change as you age, it’s very important to talk with your doctor before taking sleep aids.

Myth No. 5: Memory loss is inevitable.

The brain can produce connections at any age. Simple forgetfulness — for example, misplacing keys — and delay or slowing in recalling names, dates and events is considered part of the normal aging process. However, when memory problems begin to interfere with your daily life and activities, that is not considered normal. Talk with your doctor if you have concerns.

Myth No. 6: Older adults can’t learn new things.

Older adults can still learn new things, create new memories and improve existing skills. In fact, there are many benefits to the aging mind, including a foundation of knowledge and insight from previous experiences. And the act of learning new skills can help retain memory and cognitive function in adults.
