Fitness Tips for Older Adults
As you get older, maintaining regular physical activity is important for your heart, muscles, bones, joints and overall health. Physical activity keeps your body strong, and it helps with how you feel. Being active gives you more energy, improves your mood, and helps keep your mind sharp. It can also help reduce your risk of getting certain diseases, such as coronary artery disease, osteoporosis, and type 2 diabetes.
Below are three videos to help you create a fitness routine, overcome barriers, and advice for getting active after a health scare.
Ir a caminar.
Salir a caminar.
Being Active as a Family
When the whole family does physical activities together, children learn that being active is fun and makes you feel good. And busy parents can combine family time with exercise time. Try these tips for getting everyone in the family up and moving together.
Set some ground rules.
Make physical activity a priority. Don’t let things get in the way of family activity time.
Limit screen time.
Don’t use food as a reward for meeting activity goals.
Get started.
As a family, make a list of activities you’d like to do together.
Make sure the activities are things everyone can do and enjoy.
Keep a family home activity log, or hang a calendar on the wall for tracking activity.
Try to plan one or two family activities a week.
Once a month, plan something special that involves being active, like a trip to the zoo, a day hike, or camping.
Use a safe backpack, stroller, or bike trailer so that smaller children can be included in family activities.
Go for a walk. When family schedules get really busy, going for a walk may be the easiest thing you can do together.
Start with short walks that everyone in the family can do. Add more distance bit by bit. Younger children can ride a bike or a tricycle. You can pull a wagon in case little ones get tired.
Scavenger hunts can keep children from being bored on a walk. Keep in mind a list of “treasures” they can find, such as a red leaf, a blue house, a black dog, or an out-of-state license plate.
Use a phone app or pedometers, and work on increasing the number of steps you take on your family walks.
Register the whole family in a family fun run/walk in your community.
Try some outdoor activities.
Go for a bike ride.
Join your children in old-fashioned games like hopscotch, tag, jump rope, and hide-and-seek.
Get involved in family-friendly sports like swimming, soccer, or tennis.
Play a daily family basketball game in the driveway or at a playground.
Take up miniature golf or flying-disc golf.
Pick up trash at a local park.
Be ready with indoor and rainy-day activities.
Have a family dance night. Share dances from each generation, and teach each other to do them.
Create a new dance or exercise routine to a favorite song. Have a different child choose the song each week.
Go to the mall, and count how many laps you can walk as a family.
Have a hula hoop contest.
Set up a fun indoor obstacle course.
Helping Your Child Build Healthy Habits
Habits are hard to break. That’s why the sooner in life we build good, healthy habits, the easier it is to keep them and stay as healthy as possible. And when good habits are in place, it’s easier to resist bad ones.
The most important thing to remember is that you are your child’s role model. Your habits affect your children’s habits.
If your habits are unhealthy—smoking, drinking too much alcohol, or always expecting the worst, for example—your child is more likely to get those habits.
If your habits are healthy—eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, looking forward to tomorrow, for example—your children are more likely to build those habits in their own lives.
Here are four areas where you can help build good, lifelong habits for your child.
Healthy eating. Help your child learn healthy eating habits, how to make healthy snacks, and ways to make healthy choices when you eat out.
Regular physical activity. Encourage your child to find activities that are right for their lifestyle and personality. You could also find ways to be active as a family.
Staying safe and healthy. Teach your child how to take good care of his or her teeth, how to sleep well, and how to prevent injuries from sports and other activities.
Healthy thinking. Help your child build a healthy body image, self-esteem, and social skills. You can also help them learn how to cope with stress and avoid tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.
My Health Journey: Mike Andre
Mike Andre was very active growing up, he played baseball, basketball, skateboarding, surfing, etc. You name it, he did it. He even became captain of the football and baseball team in high school. Being raised by a single mom, Mike’s coaches became the father figure that he never had.
After high school, Mike wanted to join the military thinking he would only stay for 4 years, learn some discipline, and then go to college. But he ended up staying for 30 years, serving 21 years in Special Operations. Although they were some of the best years of his life, they took a tremendous toll on his body. He had 4 hernia discs in his back, several concussions, multiple hernia discs in his neck, and 4 shoulder surgeries. Even though he was in pain, he just pushed through it for all those years.
He had limited physical activity, began drinking and eating, and struggled with depression and anxiety from the stress of his working environment and not knowing if he was going to have a job after transitioning from the military. He weighed 270 pounds, the heaviest he has ever been in his life. By the time he got help, he was already a broken man.
One morning, Mike looked into the mirror and decided he needed to change. Mike leaned into holistic ways to help heal himself and his body, where he learned the therapeutic benefits of yoga, mindfulness, and acupuncture. He began to prioritize his exercise and started eating healthier which made a huge difference in his mental health.
Mike now works out 5 times a week, mainly outdoors to connect with nature, and meditates to help him keep a positive mindset. Mike has lost 70 pounds since he decided he was going to put himself first and change his life.
Today, Mike is the Senior Director of Operations at the VEBA Resource Center.
“VEBA’s holistic approach to wellness is exactly what helped me get back on the right path”.
Mike is passionate about helping others find healing the way he once did, and to let others know they are not alone on their health journey.

Try the 4-week plank challenge, an opportunity to build strength and stamina by holding the perfect plank each day and a little longer each week. But before you get started, remember, the shortest distance to a proper plank is a straight line:
Keep your ears in line with your shoulders.
Line up your elbows under your shoulders.
Squeeze your backside, but don’t lock your knees.
Keep your pelvis in a neutral position.
Keep your shoulders, hips and heels in line.
Keep your ankles at 90 degrees.
Week 1
Goal: Hold for 30 seconds.
Theme: Perfect your plank. This week, set yourself up in front of the mirror to make sure you’re doing it right.
Week 2
Goal: Hold for 1 minute.
Theme: Remember the benefits. This week, remind yourself how planks help strengthen your core, glutes, low back and upper body, while providing support to your spine and pelvis.
Week 3
Goal: Hold for 90 seconds.
Theme: Shake up your plank. This week, shake things up and work a variety of muscles by trying a side plank, a reverse plank, a one-legged plank or a plank where you lift one arm and leg out in turn.
Week 4
Goal: Hold for 2 minutes.
Theme: Align your body and mind. This week, list the things you’re thankful for and stop focusing on the workout — it can help you get through your longer planks and feel more grounded and positive throughout your day.

We know that diet contributes to helping maintain a healthy weight. But did you also know that diet can play an important role in helping to lower cholesterol and, in turn, reduce the risk of heart disease?
Cholesterol — a waxy substance that travels through the bloodstream — can limit blood flow and lead to heart attack or stroke. But not all cholesterol is bad. The good news is there are foods that can help lower cholesterol levels and improve other risk factors for heart disease:
High-fiber foods: Dietary fiber, particularly soluble fiber from whole grains — such as oats, brown rice and quinoa — as well as whole fruits, vegetables and legumes (beans, peas and lentils) may help lower LDL cholesterol. Women should aim for at least 25 grams of fiber per day and men should aim for at least 38 grams of fiber.
Phytosterols: Most plant foods — fruits, vegetables, legumes, vegetable oils, nuts, seeds and whole grains — contain a small amount of a substance called plant sterols and stanols, also known as phytosterols, that may help lower LDL cholesterol.
Omega-3 fatty acids: Replacing saturated fats with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids has been shown to reduce blood triglyceride, or fat, levels and increase HDL cholesterol levels. Omega-rich foods include:
Fish and other seafood — especially cold-water fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring and sardines
Nuts and seeds, such as flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts
Plant oils, such as flaxseed oil, soybean oil and canola oil
Fortified foods, such as certain brands of eggs, yogurt, juices, milk, soy beverages and infant formulas
It’s also important to limit your intake of foods high in saturated fat, as these can increase your LDL cholesterol and your risk of developing heart disease, stroke and obesity. Additionally, exercise is important in maintaining heart health.
