My Health Journey: Mike Andre

Mike Andre was very active growing up, he played baseball, basketball, skateboarding, surfing, etc. You name it, he did it. He even became captain of the football and baseball team in high school. Being raised by a single mom, Mike’s coaches became the father figure that he never had.

After high school, Mike wanted to join the military thinking he would only stay for 4 years, learn some discipline, and then go to college. But he ended up staying for 30 years, serving 21 years in Special Operations. Although they were some of the best years of his life, they took a tremendous toll on his body. He had 4 hernia discs in his back, several concussions, multiple hernia discs in his neck, and 4 shoulder surgeries. Even though he was in pain, he just pushed through it for all those years.

He had limited physical activity, began drinking and eating, and struggled with depression and anxiety from the stress of his working environment and not knowing if he was going to have a job after transitioning from the military. He weighed 270 pounds, the heaviest he has ever been in his life. By the time he got help, he was already a broken man.

One morning, Mike looked into the mirror and decided he needed to change. Mike leaned into holistic ways to help heal himself and his body, where he learned the therapeutic benefits of yoga, mindfulness, and acupuncture. He began to prioritize his exercise and started eating healthier which made a huge difference in his mental health.

Mike now works out 5 times a week, mainly outdoors to connect with nature, and meditates to help him keep a positive mindset. Mike has lost 70 pounds since he decided he was going to put himself first and change his life.

Today, Mike is the Senior Director of Operations at the VEBA Resource Center.

“VEBA’s holistic approach to wellness is exactly what helped me get back on the right path”.

Mike is passionate about helping others find healing the way he once did, and to let others know they are not alone on their health journey.

4-Week Plank Challenge

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

Try the 4-week plank challenge, an opportunity to build strength and stamina by holding the perfect plank each day and a little longer each week. But before you get started, remember, the shortest distance to a proper plank is a straight line:

  • Keep your ears in line with your shoulders.
  • Line up your elbows under your shoulders.
  • Squeeze your backside, but don’t lock your knees.
  • Keep your pelvis in a neutral position.
  • Keep your shoulders, hips and heels in line.
  • Keep your ankles at 90 degrees.

Week 1

  • Goal: Hold for 30 seconds.
  • Theme: Perfect your plank. This week, set yourself up in front of the mirror to make sure you’re doing it right.

Week 2

  • Goal: Hold for 1 minute.
  • Theme: Remember the benefits. This week, remind yourself how planks help strengthen your core, glutes, low back and upper body, while providing support to your spine and pelvis.

Week 3

  • Goal: Hold for 90 seconds.
  • Theme: Shake up your plank. This week, shake things up and work a variety of muscles by trying a side plank, a reverse plank, a one-legged plank or a plank where you lift one arm and leg out in turn.

Week 4

  • Goal: Hold for 2 minutes.
  • Theme: Align your body and mind. This week, list the things you’re thankful for and stop focusing on the workout — it can help you get through your longer planks and feel more grounded and positive throughout your day.

Stress Less, Live Better

What is the link between stress and sleep?

If you are having ongoing sleep problems, think about whether you may be under a lot of stress. Stress is a normal part of everyday life, but an increase in stress can cause physical and emotional problems.

If you think that stress is causing your sleep problems, work with your doctor to develop a plan to reduce your stress level or check out “4 Tips for Improving the Quality and Quantity of Sleep” to learn more ways to help with sleep.

2 Stretches to Help Ease Back Pain

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

A healthy back keeps you doing the things you love, such as playing with your children or grandchildren, climbing a trail, traveling or walking long distances. Without a healthy back, your life becomes limited. Try these two simple stretches to help prevent and alleviate back pain:

Overhead arm and body stretch

  • Sit your bottom more in the middle to front of a chair or stand to begin.
  • Raise your arms over your head, with your palms facing forward.
  • Breathe five to 10 deep breaths. Your arms do not need to be fully straight.
  • Lower your arms and repeat if desired.

Alternate side body stretch

  • Stand about a foot away from the wall.
  • Raise one hand and arm up on the wall and the other hand flat directly at shoulder level on the wall.
  • Then reach as high as you can with the hand on the wall above your head and breathe in three to five deep breaths.
  • Lower the raised arm and repeat with the other arm.

Stretching the back reduces tension in muscles supporting the spine, which can worsen pain from any number of back pain conditions. It also improves range of motion and overall mobility, reducing the risk of disability caused by back pain.

The VEBA Resource Center offers Full Body Stretch classes. With so much extra sitting and stress these days, taking a timeout for a full-body stretch session is more important than ever. Join the VRC team for a class that will leave you feeling relaxed, restored and maybe even standing up a bit straighter! Check out our calendar to sign up for an upcoming class.

My Health Journey: Laura Kim

If you want to see the picture of health and happiness, look at Laura Kim. Her radiant face and beautiful smile show us what happens when we commit to healing our body, mind, and soul.

Like many Americans, Laura’s struggle with food and weight began at a young age when she started sneaking junk food to feed her emotions. Despite remaining physically fit through competitive swimming, her eating habits didn’t change and additional health problems followed.

Add to this the fact that Laura is deaf. Not only did she deal with multiple prejudices, she also faced our challenging healthcare system, set up in a way that advantages hearing people. The Deaf Community, says Laura, tends to have higher cases of obesity and misdiagnoses because of the lack of access to good, thorough health information. This includes interpreters and captioned videos.

Laura hit rock bottom in 2018 after a serious car accident involving her parents. The stress from that accident worsened her eating habits and, eventually, she weighed more than 200 pounds. Laura decided to change her mental and physical relationship to food. She began to see good nutrition and exercise as ways to heal her body. It took time and commitment, and there’s daily work to do, but Laura is “in control and on a positive path.”
