Staying On Your Healthy-Eating Plan during the Holidays

When you plan ahead, you can have a healthy holiday season and still reach your healthy-weight goals. It can help if you try not to think of the holidays as a time to give up things you enjoy. Instead, think of it as a time to give yourself something you want more—to reach your healthy weight.

Here are some ideas that may help you stay on track and still be festive.

Plan ahead to avoid temptations.

From buffet tables to candy dishes, every holiday serves up tasty reasons to slip. These strategies may help you through the holidays and after.

  1. Have a healthy snack before you go.
What’s your favorite healthy snack? Popcorn, fresh fruit, or nuts are a few ideas. When you feel full, you’re less likely to overeat later.
  2. Bring a healthy dish.
What dish makes you feel guilt-free? Grilled fish, steamed vegetables, brown rice, or a spinach salad are good options. Not only would you have a food you love at the table, but your host may appreciate the contribution.
  3. Save second helpings for later.
Wouldn’t that extra serving taste just as good tomorrow? A piece of cake or that delicious turkey can be frozen. You might enjoy it even more a month from now, when holiday treats aren’t so available. And having it then can remind you how well you took care of yourself.

What might work to help you plan ahead?

Create new, healthier holiday traditions.

Start some healthy new traditions that don’t involve eating. Here are some you could try:

  1. Volunteer with family and friends.
What’s a cause that you care about? Food banks, animal shelters, or other nonprofit organizations can use your help.
  2. Join a community walk/run.
Is this something you could do as a family or with friends? Walking as a group for a good cause can strengthen the bond you have with others.
  3. Make the time together count.
What would make a gathering more meaningful? Playing games, putting a puzzle together, or reading a favorite book out loud are some things you can do with a group of friends or family.

Those are just a few ideas. Maybe they’ll help you think of other things to try that could be the start of a healthier holiday tradition.

Take care of yourself.

Before the guests arrive or you head out to the festivities, take a little time for yourself to regroup, recharge, and renew. Here are a few ideas that might help you enjoy the holidays and stay with your plan:

  1. Eat mindfully.
What’s the rush? Eat slowly, and taste every bite. When you take the time to eat mindfully, you can enjoy the gifts that healthy foods offer to your body and mind.
  2. Sleep in.
Why not? When you have the sleep you need, you will have the energy you need to stay on your healthy-eating plan.
  3. Be kind to yourself.
Feeling the stress of the holidays? It’s okay to disappear for a few minutes to sit, close your eyes, and take in a few deep breaths. When you’re relaxed, you may be better able to handle the stresses that could get you off track.

How can you make this holiday season one that you can celebrate and feel good about?

6 Tips for Coping with ‘New Normal’ Anxiety

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

Though experiencing some anxiety can be a healthy response in certain situations, anxiety can also leave us feeling fearful of reengagement with the world around us. Try these six tips to cope with your ‘new normal’ anxiety:

  1. Normalize what you’re feeling. It’s OK to feel some anxiety if you miss work-from-home routines, such as having pets around, or as you enter an in-office experience that is more restricted and regulated than it was pre-COVID. Reminding yourself of this is a great step in normalizing the emotions that may come up.
  2. Be kind to yourself. Criticizing yourself or thinking “I shouldn’t feel this way” often increases how anxious you feel. Try to reframe your thoughts and emotions. Allow yourself the space to say, “I don’t feel good enough, but I’m doing the best I can given the resources I have.”
  3. Be present. Anxiety can leave you feeling stressed, overwhelmed or uneasy about the future. Engaging in activities that anchor you to the present moment can help decrease anxiety. Draw your attention to what you have control over today.
  4. Breathe with intention. Focusing on your breathing is something you can do anywhere and can have a positive impact on anxiety levels. Deep breathing involves taking slow, deep breaths in through the nose, letting the chest expand with air, and slowly releasing it out through the mouth.
  5. Continue positive routines. You may have established new routines to help you through the pandemic. Explore which you would like to continue. Consider things that helped you feel calm, invoked positive feelings about yourself, or you just had a fun time with, and maintain them or modify them as needed.
  6. If you feel like your anxiety is becoming too overwhelming, seek support. Remind yourself that it’s OK to ask for help. Having the support of friends and family can help to reinforce that you don’t have to go through this experience alone. And a mental health provider can provide you with a safe space to explore your mental health and learn new coping skills.

Reducing Stress During the Holidays

The holidays are a busy time. They can demand extra attention for cooking, cleaning, party planning, hosting, and talking with family members we might not always agree with. It’s no wonder that stress during the holidays is common. By learning to reduce this stress, you might find that you enjoy the holidays more. These tips can help.

  • Keep up your healthy habits.
Get professional help if you need it. The holidays can be a big event. And stress leading up to them is common. Talking to a friend or family member may help. But you may also want to see a counselor before the holidays start. A counselor can help you change the way you handle stress.
  • Staying healthy is your best defense against holiday stress.
You can stay hydrated by bringing a water bottle with you to refill. Try eating a healthy snack before a party. If you don’t show up hungry, you’ll be less likely to fill up on sweets.
  • Practice gratitude.
Having gratitude means saying thank-you for what’s good in your life. There are many ways you can practice gratitude.
    • Before meals, give thanks to those who grew it and cooked it. Give thanks even if that person was you.
    • Remember the ways—good and bad—that others show you that they care. Choose to be positive.
    • Keep it up. It may take awhile to catch on. But when it does, you might find that an attitude of gratitude spreads quickly.
  • Take time to unwind.
You might try taking deep breaths or going for a walk. Maybe you need time to yourself after being with family. Even a little break can make a big difference to reduce stress.
  • Make time for joy.
This could be baking, playing games, or volunteering in your community. Maybe take a plate of cookies to a neighbor. Do what feels right for you.
  • Share holiday tasks.
Let everyone help with shopping, cooking, cleaning, and event planning. If you really dislike doing dishes, help with cooking instead. Sharing tasks lets everyone be part of making the holidays special.
  • Reflect together.
Before you say goodbye, gather everyone to reflect. Go around the room. Let everyone share their favorite part of the holiday and what wasn’t so great. Brainstorm ways to make the “not so great” things more enjoyable next time.
  • Have realistic expectations.
No holiday gathering is perfect. Don’t let something like forgetting to defrost the turkey ruin the day. Be flexible, and let it become another holiday memory. View these experiences as chances to practice being resilient.

Podría probar a respirar hondo o salir a caminar.

Reset Your Health for Fall

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

After a busy summer, adjusting to seasonal schedules and warm-weather travel, you may be guilty of neglecting healthy habits, including diet and exercise. However, fall is the perfect time to hit refresh on your health.

Instead of waiting until January to start exercising and eating healthy again, set good behavior patterns now, while daylight hours are longer and the weather remains pleasant.

Nutrition

Fall is the perfect time for resetting your diet. Try these strategies to help you get back on track:

  1. Stay away from the diet mentality. Diets do not work long term. Instead, focus on small, sustainable changes to your nutrition habits. For example, eliminate added sugars, or add more fruits and vegetables to every meal.
  2. Find a meal routine that works for you. Find a plan that leaves you energized and satisfied all day. Whether that’s three meals or five small meals, focus on a balanced mix of veggies, fruit, whole grains, proteins and healthy fats.
  3. Plan your meals. Set aside time each week to plan your meals to eliminate guesswork and keep you on a healthy track. Meal prep can also help with portion control if your goal is to watch your weight.

Fitness

Hit refresh on your fitness goals. Create a routine that is manageable and realistic with these tips:

  1. Start slowly. Start with two workout sessions a week and try to build up to four workout sessions a week. Keep an exercise journal to set new goals and reflect on how your workouts make you feel.
  2. Try something new. Go hiking, take a different class or learn a new sport. Find a workout that you will enjoy, ensuring you’ll be consistent and less likely to skip it.
  3. Create accountability. Having a workout partner can help with accountability and workout motivation and make exercising more fun. It also adds friendly competition to keep you focused on your goals.

Be consistent with your nutrition and fitness and you’ll soon feel healthier and happier for the new season ahead.

Planning Ahead to Reduce Holiday Stress

We all feel stress from time to time. The holidays seem to make busy schedules feel even busier. Planning ahead can help make the holidays memorable—in a good way. Here are some tips to help you prepare.

  • Know your budget.
Decide how much you can comfortably spend. For gifts, you might have a money limit or decide to give homemade gifts this year. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to show someone you care.
  • Have realistic expectations.
No holiday gathering is perfect. Don’t let something like forgetting to defrost the turkey ruin the day. Be flexible, and let it become another holiday memory. View these experiences as chances to practice being resilient.
  • Communicate clearly.
After you’ve made a plan, share it. When traveling between households, let others know when you plan to come and go. Clear communication can lead to more realistic expectations and less stress.
  • Make time for you.
Take time to renew your energy. You might say no to some things or people so you can do this. That’s okay. When you say no to some things, you can say yes to others. Choose what gives you energy or makes you feel calm. That might be visiting a friend, reading a book, or going for a walk on your own.
  • Involve everyone in making the holidays special.
Share the work of preparing for and cleaning up after the holidays. For example, ask for help when making cookies. One person can make the dough, while another person scoops and bakes the cookies. Someone else can help by cleaning up the dishes and wiping down the table.
  • Get professional help if you need it.
The holidays can be a big event. And stress leading up to them is common. Talking to a friend or family member may help. But you may also want to see a counselor before the holidays start. They can help you change the way you handle stress.
