Why You Should Change Up Your Workout Routine

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

Many of us do the same regular fitness workout, sticking with what we know — and what is comfortable.

But while consistency and routine are important to any fitness program, mixing up your workout can provide additional benefits to your mind and body.

Reduce risk of injury

It’s OK to do the same workout routine daily if the intensity is not too extreme. Frequency can be a good thing if it’s done safely.

However, varying your workouts can decrease overuse and optimize physical benefits. By mixing up your activities, you give your muscles and joints a chance to rest and recover before working them again.

Break through a weight-loss plateau

If you’ve settled into your fitness routine, you’ll probably notice you’re not making as much progress in improved fitness as you used to. Our bodies adapt to repetition with greater efficiency.

When you vary your workout routine, you use different muscle groups. This introduces a new challenge to specific muscles and allows groups of muscles to work together differently. Muscles require energy and can help you burn more calories.

A varied workout schedule that balances strength and cardio may look like:

  • Monday: Run
  • Tuesday: Strength train and swim
  • Wednesday: Run
  • Thursday: Strength train and swim
  • Friday: Run
  • Saturday: Strength train and swim
  • Sunday: Rest

Stay motivated

Changing your workout routine challenges your mind. It keeps your body guessing and prevents boredom. Incorporating new exercises can also keep you motivated.

Instead of moving through the same workout routine you’ve been doing for months, try adding new movements and activities, or try different equipment at the gym. Often, the change can be refreshing and rewarding.

The VEBA Resource Center offers Beginner Strength Training with Resistance Bands classes. Join us for this beginner/all levels class that incorporates low-impact movements and light cardio training to build muscle and burn fat safely using resistance bands. Importance of Strength Training as We Age

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

Staying physically active is critical to slowing the aging process and staying healthy. However, while cardio training offers incredible benefits, it is not the only form of exercise you need to engage in as you get older. The loss of muscle tissue due to aging can affect older adults’ ability to perform many routine activities and lead an independent lifestyle.

Fortunately, regular strength training — also called resistance training and weightlifting — can help prevent or reverse muscle loss. When strength training, you use your own body weight or various tools, such as dumbbells, barbells, or resistance bands, for resistance to build muscle, strength, and endurance.

Strength training can help:

  • Maintain muscle tissue and strength
  • Contribute to better balance and coordination, and reduce the risk of falls
  • Preserve bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis
  • Improve sleep and reduce depression
  • Help with fat loss

Sharp suggests the following 5 tips to begin a strength training routine:

  1. Train the upper body on the first day and the lower body on the second day. Upper body training may include working the chest, back, shoulders, biceps, and triceps. Lower body training may include working the legs, glutes, and abs.
  2. When picking a weight level, choose a weight that can be lifted at least 10 to 15 times in 1 set. Begin with 1 or 2 sets of 10 to 15 reps.
  3. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between sets.
  4. Progress gradually by adding more sets and more reps, or increasing the weights every few weeks.
  5. To improve flexibility, make sure to stretch after weight-lifting sessions.

If you are a beginner, consider working with a personal trainer to learn how to lift weights properly. If this is not an option, there are many dependable online fitness channels to help you on your strength training journey.

Finding Joy in Movement

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

After more than two years of pandemic turmoil, things continue to cause uncertainty and stress. In times like these, we could use a little more happiness, connection and hope, and we can find it all through physical movement.

Regular movement helps with weight management, reduces risk of disease, improves sleep, and strengthens bones and muscles. What’s more, it is essential to our happiness and increases life satisfaction.

The key to harnessing the benefits of movement is to move your body in a way that you enjoy, as opposed to doing something you have to force yourself through. Some days, it may mean taking a walk with a friend or doing a gym workout — other days, it might be joining your favorite dance class.

Additional ways to move naturally with joy include:

  • Playing outside with your kids
  • Participating in team sports
  • Taking hikes
  • Chasing your dog at the park
  • Rock climbing
  • Playing Wii Fit
  • Jumping rope or hula-hooping
  • Swimming
  • Having an at-home dance party
  • Bike riding

Movement helps us physically and emotionally. It provides us with a sense of accomplishment, improves our outlook on life and boosts our confidence. When all these things are at play, we are happier and healthier.

Get Fit, Stay Fit

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

It’s easy to fall into a workout rut. Busy schedules and the demands of life make it difficult to maintain your fitness habits. However, it can be a mistake to stop being active. As you age, the body goes through a series of changes, including slower metabolism, muscle loss, weight gain and reduced bone strength.

If you do nothing to counteract the decline in fitness over the years, you can be at a greater risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke and even some types of cancer. The good news is that most of these changes are preventable and can be significantly improved by incorporating strength, flexibility and aerobic training into your routine.

Strength Training

Fitness experts recommend strength training two or more days a week, with exercises that work all major muscle groups. Strength training can:

  • Replace lost muscle
  • Raise metabolism
  • Provide relief from joint pain
  • Help maintain a healthy weight

Flexibility Training

Regular flexibility exercises, such as yoga, Pilates, foam rolling or simple stretches throughout your day can:

  • Prevent injuries
  • Improve your balance
  • Keep your body limber
  • Help you do everyday tasks, such as bending and reaching, with ease

Cardiovascular Exercise

Regular aerobic activity, such as walking, bicycling or swimming, can help you live longer and healthier. Thirty minutes of aerobic activity, five times a week, helps:

  • Strengthen your heart and lungs
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes
  • Improve immune function
  • Lower blood pressure

And don’t forget about nutrition. Supplement your exercise routine with a balanced diet to maintain your fitness and well-being.

The VEBA Resource Center offers Mat Pilates. Mat Pilates is a training program of repetitive exercises performed on a mat to promote strength, stability and flexibility. It includes core exercises, such as planks, to build your muscles and core strength. This class allows for modifications, so all levels are welcome!

VEBA Resource Center ofrece clases HIIT Cardio Beginner. Make Your Home Workout a “HIIT”

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

High-intensity interval training, commonly called HIIT, combines weights and cardio for short bursts of intensity. These workouts are versatile, can be done in the comfort of your own home, and help to build muscle, burn calories and boost your heart rate.

How to start HIIT:

  • Build your own gym. Consider buying secondhand things like dumbbells, a medicine ball, a rollout mat or kettlebells.
  • Start slow, then go. Begin doing the exercises with low or no weight and build from there. Once you feel confident that your form is correct and you have a system in place, begin to dial up the intensity by increasing weight, decreasing rest or adding more volume to an allotted period.
  • Try this full-body HIIT workout. Here’s one example — using body weights only — that requires minimal rest, submaximal exertion and lots of heart-pumping cardio. Try to do as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes.
EXERCISEREPSREST/ADJUSTMENTS
Jumping jacks30No rest
Squats20No rest, add weight
Push-ups15No rest, done on edge of a bench, wide or narrow grip
Reverse lunges10 each legNo rest, add a jump in between
Bent-over rows12 each armNo rest, use a purse or other weight
Mountain climbers30 secondsRest as needed

Lat Pull Down

Funciona para: Espalda, Hombros y la Caja Torácica

  7. Cambie de lado y repita.

3 Resistance Band Exercises to Strengthen Your Body

From Sharp Health News, a publication of Sharp HealthCare

When access to the gym isn’t possible or you simply crave some variety for your workouts, mini resistance bands – or loop bands – are a good go-to. They are easy to use, affordable, super versatile and offer a great addition to at-home yoga, stretching and Pilates routines.

Try these three resistance band exercises to tone your body from head to toe:

Lat Pull Down

Works: Back, Shoulders and Core

  1. Loop a band around the middle of your hands and bring both hands above your head.
  2. Keep the left arm in place, squeeze your back and pull your right arm down and to the side, toward the ribcage.
  3. Slowly return to start and repeat for 10 reps.
  4. Switch sides and repeat.

Bicep Curls

Works: Biceps, Forearms

  1. Kneel on a yoga mat with your right leg planted at a 90-degree angle.
  2. Slip the resistance band over your right foot and press it firmly into the ground.
  3. Grab the resistance band with your right palm facing up. Pull the right hand with the band up toward the shoulder into a bicep curl, and release down.
  4. Repeat 10 times
  5. Switch sides and repeat.

Squat-to-Side Kick

Works: Glutes, Hips

  1. Begin by looping your band around your legs just above your ankles.
  2. Stand with your feet hip-width apart (keeping tension in the band), engage your glutes and push your hips into a squat.
  3. Push back to standing.
  4. Immediately lift your right leg out to your side, flexing your foot and keeping your toes pointing forward.
  5. Bring the leg back to the starting position. This is one rep.
  6. Repeat for 10 reps, never letting the tension leave your band.
  7. Switch sides and repeat.
